Simple Sunday ~ Culebra

Yesterday and last night into the wee hours, we waited for an appearance from Rafael. In the late afternoon, just as expected, the sky went stormy bruised colored, the water had that metallic sheen and glow, black clouds were scudding across the horizon. And then...it all stopped.

This is the bounceback of the sunset from my yard
There was blue in the sky, a truly beautiful sunset, and...nothing. No rain, an occasional cooling breeze to mitigate the hot stillness, and more of nothing. We watched the radar, we chatted online and through emails and weather sites, island to island, phone calls from the states to say, yes, it's nothing. And then there was this.

And I could only think of Kokopelli, the mischief maker.

Preparing for the worst, hoping for the best, that's simply how we roll. For Guadalupe and other islands badly affected by Rafael, we hope for your best, even while I feel ungrateful, wishing we'd just gotten some badly needed rain.

Feeling two things, or more,  at once is pretty common here. Life in Paradox. Again.

  1. Mischief Maker Indeed! As we watched from afar and showed the radar to friends and family on our smartphones, we watched in amazement as he just stopped and went north. Amazing. ¡¡Gracias, Rafael!!

  3. Hi MJ,
Glad you are back home, though your posts "from the road" were wonderful. So grateful that Rafael kept it's distance. Thanks again for the advice you gave us regarding our California/Oregon trip. We have been camping in Northern California for 3 weeks now and I can't get enough!!! Spent time in Garberville, Trinidad and Klamath. Awe inspiring Redwoods yet the Coast is just around the next bend. It is almost too much to take in and my face hurts from smiling. Headed inland and spent a week panning for gold in Happy Camp, CA. Backtracked to the coast, Crescent City, where we hiked amongst the "Giants" in Jebediah Smith State Park. Lots of funky little towns that have maybe seen better days but the people are friendly and the views can't be beat. Next leg of the trip is up the Oregon Coast.
    All the best,
    Karen

  5. My own Kokopelli has changed shapes since his broke-neck caribe adventure and leaves for the family trading post in Zuni NM tomorrow. Now I need to find a cat sitter before 3 Kings!

  6. Invoke Kokopelli, after such a trip he should be willing to scratch up a sitter!
