Here and Now

I thought by now I'd have been exploring a bit, because there is a lot to explore around Michigan. More than I knew, definitely. Here are a few factoids from the Michigan Dept. of Transportation that make me want to hit the road. More lighthouses than any other state in the nation? I'm in!
  1. A hand-cranked chain ferry carries pedestrians across the Kalamazoo River at Saugatuck.
  2. The oldest surviving lighthouse in Michigan is the Fort Gratiot light, built in 1825 near Port Huron.
  3. The Livingston Memorial Lighthouse on Belle Isle is the only marble lighthouse in the nation.
  4. Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state in the nation (124).
  5. Michigan has more than 100 ports serving recreational, ferry, and commercial interests.

The bird nest in the corner of the porch. Nothing seems to disturb her mission; maybe she thinks I can't see her?
But so far I've been nursing myself due to the gift that never stops giving, airplane flu. Thank you, coughing person who's air I had to breathe. I think I'm closing in on the other side of it and good thing, as a friend is driving a long, long way to see me since my feet are on the mainland. Where's that hand-cranked ferry?

Have a travel tasting Thursday. Do something thematic.

    1. I was looking at the site, kind of was hoping for little more funky, but the drive could be a good one!

  2. When I first started working here (at the airport) I got sick a lot. Now my immune system seems to have adjusted.
    Hope you feel better soon.

  3. Saugatuck is a fun little town - good food at Phil's, good cocktails at the White House (not sure what streets they are on). If you are driving along the lake shore the drive will be pretty. You are lucky enough to be enjoying some of Michigan's finest weather right now. I hope you feel well enough to enjoy it!

    1. I'd been once, to a pretty little town called Manchester, many lifetimes ago for a short while, so I had good expectations! Now, if I could find that guy...
