I'm So Full!!

Take a bunch of people (who happen to be related)who love good food and set them loose on Culebra. Hide scales.

In between is a lot of porch time and beach time. It's like being on holiday at home. That works.

My family loves good food. We love to go out for good food. We also love to cook. There's been a lot of both going on up here on the hill and, not unlike a night of being over served, I'm starting to think maybe never eating again is in order.

Deeeeeelicious!
Lechon from those guys. Churrasco from Milka's. Lamb from the big island. Spaghetti because there was still beef from the burgers one night.

We hit Dinghy Dock en masse on Super Bowl Sunday, fish and steaks and much more that I can't remember. What I do remember was Sarah and Ouasha proudly telling me they ate the fish eyes (tastes like chicken liver, according to Sarah). I think that could help with my temporary food ban.

Over here! Over there!
Susie's was excellent as ever. Thanks to all the great people who handled our movable feast.

This was not a selfie. Thanks to our server, sorry we didn't stay still!

O getting a lesson in the fine art of corkage.
There really are more beach photos but this is the best I can do for now. Family time is filling!

Have a take it to the top Tuesday. Do something throughly.

Back on track...Culebra style

Yesterday seemed like about four days in one. It started with my laptop cursor laughing at me, going every which way but where I wanted it to go until I gave up. Before I threw it out the door. Culebra teaches patience and I can be incredibly patient, but sometimes...I can't. So I went to the cart early, via the dinghy. It was nice until it rained. I was trying to hook up with Balloon John (aka Computer John, etc) to buy a mouse for the laptop and sort of got that going. Then I went to buy gas for the dinghy. I was going to just walk the container over but it was misty and I was already damp so decided to take the dinghy around.

Except, right behind the ferry, the engine died. I had every *sucked into the props* story instantly in my brain as a few security guards watched me in semi-entertained mode. rowing back to the pilings below the gas station. I climbed out, tied up the boat, threw out the anchor to keep the engine off the rocks. Climbed up said rocks. Filled up with gas, the whole time wondering what on earth would happen next, as the current was running strong and the ferry wasn't gone yet. So standing in the water I tried starting the engine (magical thinking = maybe it fixed itself while laughing at me) and it started! So into the blustery away I went and made it home just fine.

Chick Chick and her two chicks are settling in fine in the coop. Mama Teresa makes sure I'm being a good caretaker (what do I know about chickens!), so far so good. The three hens who run about the yard are sort of hanging out near the coop now. Maybe when the chicks are bigger I'll throw them in too!

John came over (where YOU live, does the computer dude walk to your house in the RAIN? I bet not, unless you live here) bringing a mouse, a USB quadropod thingy and some memory sticks. Along with staying around making sure they worked. Yes, he is a god. It was almost as good as a balloon birthday hat and I'm liking the mouse a lot...when I remember to use it!

After a couple of days steeped in awful with earthquakes and blood drives, it seemed like a good night to respond to a get together at Dinghy Dock. I wasn't wild about walking back in to town but then I didn't have to, as Greg was sailing over, right out of the yard. What's not to like? A good time was had by all and Milton and Grady sang and played, there and later, at Susie's where we somehow ended up. A ride home and I was out like the proverbial light, heart gladdened before the grimness had room to take over again for awhile.

In case you are noting photos for when they become famous
(and of course you'd ask because you wouldn't steal photos off the internet, right?)
they've now been at the big three venues!

Today is rainy and windy and dare I say, somewhat gloomy. Except for these happy flowers! Rain won't stop many of us from taking our donated goods to the old gym across from Palmetto Guest house. Think need. Then fill your box. I think if you have a Tupperware style box it might be a good idea to use it, weather wise and recycling over there into whatever multiple uses a big plastic box could be used for, no doubt MANY things.

Here is the more official word. Thanks Nadeen, Pam and the many more who are pulling this together!!

The Municipality of Culebra will be collecting donations starting Friday morning and will continue to collect thru the weekend.
Articles should be placed in boxes and brought to the basketball court at Barriada Clark across from Palmetto Guest House.

Following are the various articles which can easily be sent -- please help even if it's a small amount.

* Women's clothing
* Sanitary napkins
* Solid laundry soap
* Men's clothing and socks
* Baby bottles
* Children's clothing - boys and girls
* Shampoo and bath coap
* Shoes - no high heels

* Over the counter medicines
* Aspirin/pain relief (analgesics)
* Anti-diarrea (pepobismol, imodium)

* Blankets and sheets
* Small and easy to handle toys with no small parts

I left out that I was supposed to meet up with Onne Van der Wal, one of the more brilliant marine photographers, who was staying on the Wanderbird with his wife, out in the bay. I met Onne about 25 years ago in Florida at a regatta and was excited to learn he would be in the Caribbean and on Culebra at that! But weather got in the way, so I just yelled out a hello when Greg and I sailed by. Maybe next time. Check out his photos, he's got the eye!

One more thing, even though we can't see it...today is the first annular eclipse of the new year and also the longest annular eclipse of the millenneum! Just thought you should know. Thanks, Jonny!

And who says nothing much ever happens on Culebra?

Rain Day

Since this morning looks to be a rain event, I'm taking the morning off to make hot sauce. Of course, writing that will make all of the rain disappear... but it's cool and breezy. Right now it's around 76 degrees F and last year on this date it was 82 already. Which reminds me, I'm not going to be using the phrase global warming anymore. I think it's too confusing when people think the only thing going on is the world heating up when 'the coldest winter' happens somewhere breaking all sorts of records. So I've been using 'global climate change' or words to that effect instead, which, as far as I'm concerned, more accurately reflects what we're doing to the planet. So there!

The rain came just in time to give a good soaking to my newly planted sugar cane. Leave it to my brother to ste...acquire some cane up in Florida and send it to me after we had a conversation about it, laced with memories of our Dad bringing it home for us as a treat. We weren't allowed to chew gum - for which I give thanks on a regular basis when I watch people chew gum - but we could, once in awhile, chew on 'cane.

I had to steal this photo - I thought I'd taken pics of the four pieces I had, but nope!
They looked like these - but shorter, and only four of them. Ok, sort of like these...

After looking up on line how to plant it (just like yuca, you cut it in sections, leaving a couple of the rings, and lay it horizontally in the ground) I got the bed ready; that means watering the ground enough to use the pronged fork like tool to dig out rocks amid bits of dirt, then plant, then put real bought dirt on top. In this part of the garden, I'm using bird screening to keep the damn wild chickens out, who seem to be on a frenzy lately of digging / scratching up anything not guarded by something. Of course, when I have my OWN chickens, they will be much more polite. Right?

Of course, the sun is now blasting heat and shimmer off the water (this time of year the sun comes up directly in front of my main window, which means I'm pretty much typing blind here (oh, I could close the window? I don't THINK so!) so I'll leave you to your day and I'll get on with some hot sauce! Then off to Susie's, to do the last bit of prep before she re-opens tonight for Season Dos.

It was just another Monday in Paradox

The first thing that struck my eye once in town (and almost broke Chris' neck) was this woman walking by. I couldn't walk in those shoes on a basketball court, let alone our horrendously torn up roads, and yet she managed, quite gracefully. I was mesmerized by the how of it and I still can't figure it out. Maybe it's just practice, practice, practice...

The rest of the day went by at a slow lope...quiet time at the cart (except for me coughing, must be time to start wearing The Mask...). It was not quiet at the intersection by Hotel Puerto Rico and Galleria where, for the 17th time, a hole was dug, blocking the street. I think at this point it's all become a fireman drill...putting out flames rather than doing real work toward completion of this disaster project. Yesterday I heard from no less than three people that there is no apparent plan anyone can decipher, and I agree. One man said it well as we stood in front of his house talking. "In America, they make a plan, and it gets done! These men , these men...they are just looking at the sky!"

But the best part of the day was coming - other than going home, which is always the best part of my day - with the upcoming music of Anni Clarke at Susie's restaurant. She was, as promised, a delight. At times low and mellow, turning funky blues and finishing up with great humour in her Maine song, which had many Culebra applications, minus mud and snow. With only her voice and acoustic guitar the sound level was perfect, even for those sitting at the outside bar. At one point we were up and dancing (thanks Digna, Myrna and the rest...one day I'll learn how to really dance...not like you all though!), with a lot of laughter going on in out of beat measures.

Here are some photos of the night:
