Update from Terrie re Culebra Transportation

This update is to explain a bit of what is going on transportation wise concerning Culebra as well as to encourage people to take any action that might help improve the situation.

Of course, the catch 22 of posting this, with what I posted this morning is, will the same thing I do to hopefully be a help to Culebra be what scares visitors into not coming? I believe (through experience in meeting guests to Culebra over the last nine years) and very much like to think that our visitors are pretty intrepid travelers and ready to roll with what is going on...even to the point of pitching in via phone calls and polite criticism to the powers that be. Sometimes *tourists* can be the voices heard best, so to those of you who love Culebra, now is the time to show up, speak up and give back. Thanks!!!! If, after reading the following, you want to take action, this link is a list of names, addresses and phone numbers to call, fax or write. Plus, I encourage everyone who can to come visit; we need our travelers on so many levels! Culebra puts the adventure back in semi-domestic traveling!

And thanks so much, Terrie, for sending this.

Update:
As of a couple of weeks ago, the FAA was made aware of the fact that our local airlines were flying regularly scheduled flights. Unfortunately, one is licensed for charters & the other has only limited planes licensed for scheduled flights. As such most, but not ALL, flights can only accommodate charter flights at this time.

Vieques AirLink, however, does have one daily fight to/from Culebra/SJU & 3 to/from Ceiba. Otherwise, Flamenco, Culebra Air, & M & N can book chartered flights according to your individual schedule.

Following Hurricane Earl, the ferry dock, which was remodeled on top of the original dock, became damaged on the passenger boat end.  Thus,  the cargo boat is running on a modified passenger boat schedule.

This , however, is not completely out of the ordinary as often the cargo boat would be substituted for the passenger ferry when one (or more) of the passenger ferries was/were out for maintenance.

There have been days when the schedule was (very) erratic, but it should be noted that this is not always the case & that a solution to the problem is being worked on.

Too, what holds true one day can change drastically the next, so the best thing to do is to verify your personal travel plans when your travel dates draw near.

Best,
Terrie
