As Culebra Turns

There should be some good gossipy story to go with that title, but really, I was just sitting out here on the deck with a 180 view, from town to bay and beyond (sort of like Bed, Bath and Beyond but much much better). Out over the bay, it is still a bit misty, while the view to town is bell jar clear.

I'd show the view to town but I've already taken the walk that shows it best and three or four hilly walks a day is my limit. Do you hear that, dogs? While I don't think I'll end up with buns 'o steel, it can't be bad for me. I don't think. Although that would be a nice side benny.

It is feeling very Springlike around here

Of course, desert roses bloom anytime, but these seem particularly exuberant

This is Dakity with the tide higher - you can see the whole shape of the reef here, defining the line between calm waters and the sea beyond. It's a special place within a special place.

And that's it for today, boys and girls! Stay tuned for more quiet adventures! Oh, and one thing. There is a television here. It only gets about three channels, which works well for someone who doesn't have television. PBS is one station but there seems to be a few facets of it. On one of them is a children's show and I always seem to tune in when Curious George is on. Curious George, not surprisingly, is one of my favorite book characters and they've done a very good job of keeping true to him and The Man With the Yellow Hat. The last two episodes have been about composting and recycling. Yes, really. Gently funny, just like I remember him. I always wanted Pippi Longstocking and Curious George to get together, maybe on a trip to NYC to meet Eloise...

Yes, yes, this part sucks. I didn't even remember it. I need a mind eraser now, thank you.

Of course, there will always be those who beg to differ about Curious George and his stories. This person is one of them. I feel sorry for any children in this house and I'll never forgive this writer for this. Ever.

Ok, I really do need to go feed some chickens.

Have a why where and what wondering Wednesday. Do something wistful.

  1. I understand and respect your differing opinion re: Curious George. However, I'd like to note two things: 1.) The post you reference and link to here was written with tongue planted firmly in cheek, and 2.) My daughter is an extremely bright, well-adjusted little girl who loves to read all sorts of books - Curious George included. And she does not need your pity.

    Have a lovely day.

  2. Okay, having taken a few moments to process your admittedly strange visceral reaction to my post, I just have to wonder what you hoped to achieve by calling me out? I mean, the reference to Curious George? It came out of nowhere. It had nothing to do with your post, otherwise, and added no value to it whatsoever. So, did you just need to get that off your chest? Were you hoping to start a silly Internet slapfight? And most importantly, do you feel better now?

Regardless, rest assured I won't lose any sleep over the fact that you'll never "forgive" me.

    1. Oh my goodness!!! I'm really sorry you took my post so seriously. Truly, I didn't intend it as a 'calling out' or slapfight starter (new term to me). I totally knew you wrote what you wrote tongue in cheek, but there was truth in it, truth that bothered me, NOT because you wrote it, but because I couldn't ignore it.
I took a class once that extrapolated meaning out of stories to the point of the ridiculous and there was no tongue in cheek at all, so I appreciate the difference, but truth is truth. As to your daughter, I've no doubt with a smart, cheeky Mama she's got all sorts of good things going on for her. That, however, was MY sense of humor...that in your upsetness I don't think you saw. And of course you don't need my forgiveness! Once again, as my own children say, apparently I've gone too far...that would be like saying, I'll never forgive the sun for showing me that the monster in the closet was just the chair rocking in the breeze.
Your post made me laugh and I'm sorry you took my take on it so seriously. All is well. Go in peace and write some more.

    2. Fair enough. I think it was the "I feel sorry for any children in this house" line that caused me to do a double take. Otherwise, I would have likely taken what you said as a joke or, at the very least, shrugged it off. Bringing children into it tends to change the tone, though.

In any case, no worries. Thanks for clarifying.

    1. For pointing out a truth I'd rather not have thought about, in a great deconstruction of Curious George. Don't be a pot stirrer, John, unless you've got a repentant Man in a Big Yellow Hat around to bail you out!

  4. i skimmed down the curious george thing and was surprised that there are some who see much more going on in a childrens' story than perhaps the author ever intended.........interestingly, last night, jon stewart referred to curious george by saying something like "bicurious george"..........i missed the connection but the audience laughed heartily ........

  5. John, so it seems...but I think it was also the times. The authors, a husband and wife team, were really very interesting in their own right. As to Jon Stewart's reference, I can't imagine the connection. Maybe he was talking about a person named George?
