Boats and Bikes

Yesterday we went to the 2010 Boothbay Region Land Trust Boat Builder's Festival and art show in the morning. Then we headed on a most awesome detour (log cabins big and small, middle sized and tiny dotting the woods up and down the hilly road) to watch what is called Stoney's Run, a motorcycle rally of pretty immense proportions. We watched a stream of bikes go by us that went on for 20 minutes or more and that was just a partial showing. Then we went to the staging area, well, one of them, and a policeman there estimated we were looking at anywhere between one and three thousand bikes, and that, according to him and a sheriff that was there, was only about a quarter of them (biker friends, you would have LOVED this!!).

It was a perfect day for outside events, sunny and breezy; jeans and a sleeveless top felt comfortable but most people around me were in shorts. Yes, we from farther south do stick out like sore thumbs, but I'm not ashamed! Hey, the bike folks were mostly wearing jeans...but I'd say most of them weren't at the Boat Festival...

Stoney's Run is a little more than just a rally. Here is a story from last year's event, highlighting an over 20 year old charity event. The organizer, Stoney, died of cancer last year and this year's run was a memorial for him. There is more about him on his page if you are interested. He sounds like another good one gone.

"He was remembered as a union leader, artist, musician and biker, whose annual charity motorcycle rides raised thousands of dollars for those less fortunate, in particular children fighting cancer." Seth Koenig, Times Record

I'll save the boat builder's festival for tomorrow...have a good Monday and keep an eye on the weather!
