When I was reading Peter's piece in the Avis newspaper - St. Croix's local paper and it's not online, so no link, sorry - within another compilation of articles about our friend Jon Rueck, he mentioned at the end that Jon had at his bedside notes on the song Dream a Little Dream of Me; that it appeared he was working on learning it. I loved that Peter noticed that, and shared it with the rest of us.
Usually we associate that song with the Mama's and the Papa's, but I found this version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong that I think would have brought a wry grin to Peter's face. I had no idea it was recorded by so many wonderful singers of times gone by...but no doubt to Jon and Peter, this was old news.
Along with so many others, I will no longer be able to step off a plane or boat onto St. Croix and know that I can ask about anyone, where is Peter playing tonight and be pointed in some direction, though truthfully, that's not quite real yet. I'm glad we had that last lunch, and the evening when he played with Michael J. in February, at what I will forever think of as The Usual Suspects. There was catching up and nothing left unsaid. Don't forget the 'I love you's' - even if it is over a messy sandwich. 'You never know'...is not a cliche for nothing.
