A lot has happened over the last few days. But one is bigger than any of them, right now. The rest will come later.
Yesterday, our friend Peter Watson ended his long battle with cancer. If you knew Peter, you know he had amazing skills. In sailing, boat building, wood working, yes. In being just an incredibly decent, funny human being. he was shining. We'll miss his sunlight, his moonlight, his inner light. Fare well, Peter, with the wind at your back.
I have some wonderful photos of Peter, from a sailing trip to Jost, which hopefully I'll be able to get back in the next few days. In the meantime, here are two of my favorite men from a time back on Culebra. They will continue to bless us with their spirits in our lives. Home are the sailors, home from the sea. I'm imagining a fine party going on...
Awww. I didn't know Peter, but seeing the photo of Sean brought tears. So sorry for Culebra's latest loss. As for those pictures, I told you the other day in a different context that Lewis a "fixer" and I know he will fix this.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of Peter without thinking of Sean...yes.
ReplyDeleteAs to the rest, of course I believe! It will happen, thanks and safe travels, chica.
a party indeed--with smiles and stories all round...
ReplyDeleteNancy, I can almost hear them...
ReplyDeleteTO ALL our many friends in Culebra, Peter and I talked about you until the last day. See his name boards on Foxy's "Endeavor" in JVD, watch for Schooner Amanda as she still sails in the Caribbean and may just return to Culebra one day.
ReplyDeleteImagine the party! Jerry Young "Nicor", Nadeen's husband; Sean "The Rigger" Meecham; Tommy Sealegs;and Jack Carstarphen "Maverick"; Ed the Wiz. The best lies and story telling in heaven! Hide your Mt.Gay and Heinekens. Beware the potato gun!
Blessing the Boats
may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that
Lucille Clifton US poet laureate
This was our favourite poem.
Thank you so very much for this. No words, but love speaks loudly. And what a wonderful poem!
ReplyDeleteThanks for "our" posting the poem, MJ. Leslie
ReplyDeleteHugging you from here, Leslie. Oops, too tight, sorry! Thank you for sharing it...now I can love it too.
ReplyDeleteDad was always far away on his life adventure yet always available when we really needed him. He was more of a friend than a father, yet was always Dad... Miss you pops... Dean.
ReplyDelete"Always available when we really needed him." That's more than a lot of fathers will ever hear about themselves, no matter the geography.
ReplyDeleteGo well, Dean and all your sibs, I'm thinking of you from here.
