Ok, I'm Mad and I Have a Question...or Two (skip if you don't want to read a rant)

Who is ACDEC? What makes up ACDEC? And why are they allowing Victor Gonzalez to have four windmills in an environmentally sensitive area ALREADY declared unfit stability wise for anything of the sort? When he has already broken many laws, both local and federal, stealing the beach at the far end of Flamenco for his own use, including having his own security guards illegally telling locals and visitors they should not be on that section of the beach?

There are a LOT of laws to protect what he has been allowed to destroy. I am not going to list them here, but I'd be happy to get them together for anyone interested, it's already been done and already been ignored. Repeatedly. So, I would like to know, who is getting paid off here? The same people allowing the Dubon brothers to destroy the sections of waterfront on the Fulladoza side of the island? I'm pissed, just in case someone failed to notice.

I realize this is an election year. Want my vote? How about some transparent governing? How about some truth in advertising? How about giving a damn with ACTION about the destruction of this island by greedy deep pockets who will NOT be delivering on their promises of jobs of value, unless you want your children to look forward to menial labor (and trust me, I'm not knocking menial labor, it's how I survive here but that is by my own choice, not by the only thing available to me), only lining their own pockets and caring nothing for the land, the sea or the people of Culebra. Don't believe me? Go look at these areas of these three men (THREE MEN! We are 2000 people here, compadres!) and see if you see anything that betters our island for the population. You will not see that.

I have lived on other islands where men and projects like this were welcomed because lies were believed. You know where the phrase 'suck teeth and shuffle feet' comes from? From being treated slightly better than slaves by those who have the deep pockets. Look around, ask questions, get answers from other islands who allow this deception to proliferate for the benefit of a few at the expense of the many. I don't know what the Spanish word is for beholden, but trust me, it is not a good place to be coming from, and it is up to you and you and you and you to decide who your masters will be.

Basta!

There are plenty more. But today, when I heard these four windmills have been approved and that ACDEC approved them and that our interim mayor says he can't do anything about it? Though I can't personally say I heard this from Ricky and I DO hope this isn't true on any level, I'm terribly afraid it is. And I am really mad (both ways? sure!). If this is bad information, I'd deeply appreciate someone in authority getting the word to me. I'd be delighted to say "Sorry! Oopsy! That was my mistake and it wasn't true and Victor Gonzalez and the Dubons are going to be fined for every day they do not restore the ecological health and beauty to the areas they have destroyed." Please let me be wrong and hear that.

  1. Don't have time to read the links right now, but I'm pretty sure my 2 cents then, is my 2 cents now. Read "Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abbey, and see if it provides any good ideas. I thought I'd sent it but if not, I will.

  3. Hello Island Woman! My name is Federico and I am wondering if it would be possible to ask you a few follow up questions related to this blog post? I am a student from Massachusetts working on Culebra development projects and feel that you could provide some valuable insight into local residents' concerns regarding this topic. My email is fsotomayor@clarku.edu Thank you in advance !
